Journey of Himachal General Travel Guidelines

We have put together a couple of simple general guidelines for you to follow, to make your trip to India a truly pleasant one. India is a land of diversities, quite different from any other country. Each state in India has its own distinct culture, language, traditions, and food habits, all unique in their own way. It is advised that you read the following guidelines carefully to avoid any hassles or unwanted troubles along your journey.

Clothes & Accessories

India’s climate varies greatly by region, so you must pack accordingly. Include cotton outfits, sunglasses, hats, mosquito repellent cream/lotion, shoes/light sandals, moisturizing lotion, and sunblock lotion in your packing list. If you’re traveling to hill stations or the Himalayas, make sure to carry woolen outfits. Dress modestly in public places to avoid unwanted attention.

Water

Carry a bottle of sealed mineral water at all times. Check the seal before purchasing. Avoid drinking water from public taps or roadside vendors. If you want juice, opt for reputable restaurants instead of roadside stalls.

Transportation

Buses are the most affordable option, followed by auto-rickshaws, cabs, and trains. Always confirm rates with the driver before boarding a rickshaw or cab. Book train tickets in advance, and use reserved seating whenever possible to avoid crowds. If needed, you can use the “tatkal” quota for last-minute train reservations, though this may incur an extra charge. When taking long train journeys, carry toilet paper. Pre-paid rickshaw counters at train stations can help avoid bargaining with drivers.

Smoking

Most places in India have a strict ban on smoking in public areas, and it is considered a punishable offense.

Money

You can bring in foreign currency, traveler’s cheques, and drafts drawn on Indian banks or letters of credit without any limit. However, if you bring in a gross amount exceeding USD 10,000 or its equivalent, you must declare it to Indian customs authorities upon arrival using a Currency Declaration Form.

Banks & ATMs

Nationalized banks are open from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Private banks operate from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. ATMs are widely available across India.

Credit Cards

Most major hotels, shops, and restaurants accept credit cards.

Drugs

Possessing or carrying drugs is a serious criminal offense in India and is punishable under law.

Temple Codes

Respect temple rules and codes of conduct, which vary by temple. Most temples do not permit non-Hindus to enter. Remove your footwear and follow the dress code, if applicable.

Food

Enjoy authentic Indian cuisines seasoned with exotic spices and herbs. Each region has its unique culinary traditions. Savor regional specialties during your travels.

Medicines

Carry medical prescriptions and sufficient medicine for your journey. Ensure you have the proper vaccinations and precautions before entering India.

Electricity

India’s electric supply is between 220-240 volts at 50 Hertz. Two and three-pin plugs are commonly used, so you may need a voltage converter if your devices require a different voltage. Voltage converters are available in electrical stores.
